|
The method by which two computers coordinate their communications.

Data Element
|
The smallest discreet item of information in an EDI Transaction Set.
A data element may be single-character codes, literal description, or numeric values.

Direct Connect
|
Instead of using a VAN, some Trading Partners will require that
their vendors log directly into their computer to send or receive documents.

E-Commerce
|
Electronic Commerce (EC)
EC is doing business electronically.

EDI
|
Electronic Data Interchange
EDI is the computer-to-computer exchange of business information
among Trading Partners using commonly accepted standards.

EDIFACT
|
Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport
These EDI standards are published by the United Nations and are
widely used for the exchange of business documents internationally.

EDI Translation
|
The conversion of application data to and from an EDI standard format.
|

EDI Translator
|
The computer software used to perform the conversion of application data
to and from the EDI standard format.

EFT
|
Electronic Funds Transfer
A system that enables the transfer of electronic payments,
excluding remittance information, among Trading Partners and financial institutions
|
|
Encryption
|
The electronic scrambling of a document to prevent it being read by
parties other than the intended recipient.

Envelope Segments
|
A typical EDI file, in X12 format, is contained within several
envelopes. These envelopes are broken down as follows:
ISA - IEA contains the interchange
GS - GE contains the functional group
ST - SE contains the transaction set

Functional Group
|
A collection of one or more transactions of the same type (e.g. Purchase
Orders).
|
|
Interchange
|
A collection of EDI documents sent from one Trading Partner
to another. An interchange is made up of one or more Functional Groups.
|
|
Mapping
|
In EDI, the association of data field contents from an internal
computer system to the field contents in the EDI standard being used. The same mapping
takes place in reverse during the receipt of an EDI document.

Transation
|
A single electronic document sent to a Trading Partner (e.g. Invoices,
Purchase Orders, Payments)
|
|
Transaction Set
|
A standardized file layout comprised of Segments (records),
Data Elements (fields) and Qualifiers (codes), which together allow the communication
of the business information contained on most standard business documents.

VAN
|
Value Added Network
An EDI service provider offering a communication link between companies
to enable the exchange of electronic documents
|
|
XML
|
Extensible Markup Language
XML is a simplified subset of the Standardized Generalized Markup
Language (SGML) that provides a file format for representing data, a schema for describing
data structure, and a mechanism for extending and annotating HTML with semantic information.
